Becoming a PATIENT
Department of Health Guide to Getting Medical Marijuana
If you are interested in visiting our dispensaries, you must have a Pennsylvania issued Medical Marijuana Card.
The steps to apply for a card are:
1. Create a patient profile in the Department of Health’s Medical Marijuana Registry.
2. Make sure you have a valid PA identification card or Driver’s License issued from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. It is important that the address on your identification reflects your current address.
3. Obtain certification that diagnoses you with one or more of the 23 qualifying conditions from a certifying physician. You must have medical documentation with an official diagnosis in order to be certified. https://myupmc.upmc.com/
You can find physicians and third party certification centers below. Click here for information on virtual certification events. Typical price range for first time certification is $125-$200.
4. Pay $50 for your card in the Department of Health patient portal. There is a discount available for patients who receive government assistance.
We advise patients with disabilities or that require in-home support to designate caregivers. All patients are allowed to designate up to two caregivers to purchase medication on their behalf should they not be able to visit the dispensary on their own. Patients under the age of 18 are required to have two caregivers. Home health-aides or caregivers cannot enter Pennsylvania dispensaries without a state issued Medical Marijuana Caregiver identification card. The steps to becoming a caregiver are below. Any questions about the caregiver process can also be answered here.
