Myrcene is the most common terpene found in cannabis. It has an earthy and musky, yet sweet aroma and can be found in mangos, lemon grass, and hops. Myrcene has anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and analgesic effects and it is well known for causing the “couch-lock” thus making it great for those looking for sedation.

Pinene

Pinene is found in two forms, alpha-Pinene and beta-Pinene. They have piney and woodsy aroma with hints of spice and can be found in pine, rosemary, and dill. Both are known for being bronchodilators and having anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. alpha-Pinene is known to increase alertness, focus, and help short term memory. beta-Pinene is known for having anti-depressant effects.

Limonene

Limonene has a citrusy aroma and can be found in oranges and other citrus fruit rinds. It is known for its mood elevating, anti-anxiety, and stress relieving properties. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-fungal, and antiviral effects.

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene has a spicy, peppery, yet woodsy aroma and can be found in black pepper, cloves, and oregano. It is the only terpene known to interact with the endocannabinoid system. Known to be pain relieving, caryophyllene has also been shown to have antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties, and may be able to treat anxiety and depression.

Humulene

Humulene has a hoppy and earthy aroma and can be found in hops, sage, and ginger.  In addition to its anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antibacterial properties, it acts as an appetite suppressant and also provides pain relief.

Linalool

Linalool has a floral scent and is commonly found in lavender, but it also occurs in over 200 plant species. Known as one of the most powerfully sedating terpenes, linalool has anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-epileptic properties. It can also provide assistance with those managing opioid dependency.

Terpinolene

Terpinolene has a piney, lemon-lime aroma and can be found in limes, cumin and oregano. Terpinolene acts as a sedative and also has antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiproliferative, and antioxidant effects. Terpinolene is mostly found in sativa strains.
